On January 4, 2011, the US Vice-President Joe Biden met with a group of Haitian-American leaders at the White House to discuss a wide range of issues. The Vice-President reaffirm the commitment of the Obama administration to support the reconstruction of Haiti following the 2010 earthquake that devastated the country and took the lives of over 250,000 people. He also underlined the partnership that exists between the US and the international community to work in partnership with the Haitians inside the country as well as Haitians living abroad to rebuild the country.
Vice President Joe Biden was accompanied by several other senior officials of the Obama government. They addressed several other issues, including the role of the Haitian Diaspora in Haiti Reconstruction, the current Haiti election and immigration.
This was not the first time Joe Biden had direct contact with the Haitian community. In April 2010, Vice-President Biden came to Little Haiti in Miami in support of the Haitian people who were affected by the earthquake of had family members who died in it. The meeting took place at the Little Haiti Cultural Center where he met with several elected officials in the room. Joe Biden gave a hug to Rev. Reginald Jean-Mary and many others.
There are issues still unresolved by the Obama administration in regard to the Haitian community. Even though the Obama administration granted Temporary Protective Status (TPS) to tens of thousands of illegal Haitian immigrants, where they can remain in the US until Haiti is rebuilt after the devastating earthquake, new deportation policies adopted by the government have caused pain to the Haitian community.
