Haiti offered Freedom to African Americans after Independence

Following Haiti's independence in 1804, the country offered the Blacks in the United States freedom a chance to live free. During the administration of Jean Pierre Boyer, the Haitian government negotiated directly with the American Colonization Society to facilitate the emigration of Free Blacks in the United States to Haiti.
The American Colonization Society was created to facilitate the return of free African Americans back to Africa.
The Government of Jean Pierre Boyer say a unique opportunity to bring people with a variety skills to contribute to the new independent Haiti. As a result, by 1024, more than 6,000 free African Americans moved to Haiti, all traveling expanses paid by the American Colonization Society.
However, due to the difficult economic condition and the poverty in Haiti at the time, most of those who emigrated returned to the United States in a relatively short period of time.
In recognition to the contribution of the Haitian born Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable to the City of Chicago, the former Michigan avenue bridge has been renamed as Michigan Avenue Bridge in Chicago renamed Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable.
