This is getting more and more like an occupation to many Haitians. The U.N. has 12,000 U.N. military and police personnel in Haiti, known as MUNISTAH. Recently, Haitian protestors have become more vocal in their demand for a complete withdrawal of U.N. peacekeepers from Haiti.
Recent incidents did not help U.N. Peacekeeping forces either to remain in the country. They were accused last year for being responsible for the cholera outbreak in Haiti. Just last week, a video released to the press showed U.N. peacekeepers from Uruguay sexually assaulting an 18-year-old Haitian man in the town of Port-Salut in July.
Today, there was a clash outside the presidential palace in Port-au-Prince between Haitian protestors demanding the immediate withdrawal of the U.N. peacekeeping force, MINUSTAH in Haiti. The protesters who were angry over the alleged sexual assault of the 18-year-old Haitian man by U.N. peacekeepers from Uruguay throw rocks at Haitian police and Haitian Police Officers responded by firing tear gas canisters toward the crowd of several hundred. demonstrators. No U.N. Peacekeeping soldiers were present at during the protest.
It is widely expected that the Haitian president, Michel Martelly will ask for a renewal of the U.N. mission's mandate, which expires on October 15 of this year.
