This will probably be the first major conflict between the new Haitian President and some sectors of the population. In an interview accorded while in New York, President Michel Martelly declared that is not in support of the United Nations Peacekeeping force to to withdraw from Haiti at this time. He went further to say that he would not even want to reduce its current level.
The president stated that the country remains unstable and that Haiti national police was not ready to take over.
Is this a shift in the position of President Martelly? I don't think so.
The president definitely wants to get ride of the U. N. Peacekeeping force like most Haiti. However, I think that president Martelly remembers the history of Haiti as well.
"Ayiti se te glise"
The fact remains that for the past fifty years, the only president in Haiti who was able to complete his term in office was Rene Preval and it was under the protection and securrity of MINUSTAH.
The president also accused other political leaders in Haiti for playing politic instead of being a responsible citizen. “Many people are playing politics, trying to ask Minustah to leave because they want to create instability. Minustah can only leave when there is an alternative.”, he said.
The new President of Haiti, Mr. Michel Martelly, articulates his major speech at the 66th United Nation Assembly in New York. In the 14 minute speech, the Haitian president pointed out the help that Haiti received following the 2010 earthquake.
