Brazilian Prime Minister, 15 percent cut in Haiti MINUSTAH

The days of the U.N. MINUSTAH in Haiti seem to be numbered following the release of a video showing sexual abuse of a young Haitian man by the Uruguayan peacekeepers within the U.N base. The prime Minister of Brazil wants the peacekeeping forces in Haiti to be reduced from the current level of 12,000. He is proposing a cut of 15 percent with a plan to transfer responsibilities gradually to the Haitian Police Force.

This is something that is long overdue. It only makes sense to build the National force in Haiti and make it more professional than to spend millions of dollars in a foreign force such as MINUSTAH Peacekeepers from the U.N. to assure security in Haiti.

The leaked sex video has stirred anger among Haitians who are calling for MINUSTAH to leave the country. It is just another reason why these guys should leave. With the proposal of the Brazilian Prime Minister Celso Amorim to reduce the number of Peacekeeping force in Haiti by 15 percent, I just wish that is in fact a beginning and not just an action to decrease current pressure.

Only Haitians can govern their country and this is true in every sector of the society: Economy, finance as well as security.
