A pledge to provide $250 million to reform Education system in Haiti is looking more and more a reality. The Inter-American Development Bank just approved $50 million for the plan at the interim Haiti Reconstruction Commission.
The Education Reform Plan will cost the country over $4 billion over the next five years. This ambitious plan is to reform Haiti Educational system that has not been very effective by establishing a private/ public partnership. The Haitian government will provide subsidies to decrease tuition cost so that education could be accessible to more children and also become more involved in in monitoring the quality of the education received.
Before the January earthquake, quality Haiti educational system just did not exist. About 80 percent of private schools in Haiti operate without any government supervision or government-issued license. One in four Haitian teachers did not finish high school.
The plan calls for investment in building more schools throughout the country. The January earthquake destroyed more than 4,000 schools. Also, the plan will finance more training for current teachers and provide adequate resources to the Haitian Education Ministry in order to execute the reform plan. All private or public schools in Haiti will be required to meet stricter standards.
