How St. Patrick comes to be associated with Damballa

advertisement
Saint Patrick is a well known legendary figure because he drove out all the snakes out of Ireland. He is better known in Haiti as Damballa, a lwa or spirit who often appears in the form of snake in Haiti’s Voodoo religion. In Voodoo, Damballa is the Sky God, an important spirit who is considered as the primordial creator of all life and is depicted as a serpent that forms the arch of the heavens. Since voodoo was very much suppressed before, the Haitians disguised their worship by representing their spirits with Christian symbols and icons. Thus, the symbol of Damballa comprises two serpents prominent among other emblems similar to Catholic figure of St. Patrick who drove snakes out of Ireland. Serpents are an emblem of Sin and Satan. They are frequently referred in Christian art as the first tempters appeared to Adam and Eve in Eden.

The voodoo spirits were brought in from West Africa to Haiti in slave ships. The common paintings of St. Patrick illustrate snakes at his feet. St. Patrick, an escaped slave, is perhaps a good match for Damballa. Damballa is a patron protector of the handicapped, cripples, deformed, albinos and young children and provides guidance, healing, and blessings to his worshippers. Damballa does not speak but makes hissing and whistling noises like a snake in Rada rites. Rada rites follow the more traditional African patterns emphasizing the gentler, more positive attributes of the loas or Voodoo gods.

In the present day, the legend of Saint Patrick driving the snakes out of Ireland seems to be a misreading of an ancient text. The word ‘snake’ was symbolically used to represent pagans who were driven out by him from their ancient site of worship called Crom Cruich (bloody crescent).
