Is Haitian Rara associated with Evil?

advertisement
I have to admit, I am Haitian; however I do not know much about Haitia Rara.

I grew-up in Haiti when I was a child, but moved to the Uinted States before I was twenty years old. So I consider myself to have limited knowledge about certain parts of my Haitia culture. Haitian Rara falls under this category. I remember seeing a few bands back then, but it was nothing serious. I would not say that I know what Haitian Rara is all about.

Sa ou pans de ban Zobop?......

I did not see many Rara bands in Haiti. Maybe that has to do with the fact that I grew-up in the North part of Haiti and not the city of Leogane that is famous for rara.

The little information I have about Haitian Rara is that it is part of my culture. Many Haitians I talk to about Rara think that it is something "Diabolic", and it is worshiping the devil. Some of my parents who are Christians want to make me believe that Haitian Rara is something bad. Although some people say that Rara is a bad thing, I do not want to believe it is in fact the case.

QUESTIONS:

What do you know about Haitian Rara?

Is there any good thing about Haitian rara?

Any bad things about Rara?

Dear Mr Roland, (I hope you would not mind sharing with some of my friends whon I am not sure would be able to follow completely in english so i shall also translate it in french) Thank you for being sincere with your readers. I must admit that you must be among a vast majority of Haitians citizens Rara dancing and non rara participants who know practically nothing of the customs to which they are participating or avoiding as the case may be. Basically, almost everything in Haiti has a superstitious link ( Incomplete information of Natural Laws which get linked through ignorance to religion either in <> or Catholicism). Even the beginning battle for independance is superstitiously linked to vodou. Even historians are confused unto this fact. The only three who keep their identity in both religions and Vodou are : God the Father refered to as << Papa bon dj? and Jesus refered to as himself and the Holy Spirit as <> . ** Les seuls ?arder leur identit?ont Dieu le P?, connu comme <> practices is linked or has an equivalent in Catholic "Spiritism". For instance, each of these superstitions for instance:<< St Jacques Le Majeur's>> statue is used to represent a Vodou spirit. Even Saint Mary under what name she is known is used to represent several forms of Vodou spirits. St John the Evangelist is used to represent <>, St John the Baptist would then be another form of Vodou spirit. What is certain is that it seems to have begun when believers wanted to justify the power of their beliefs, attaching them to Catholicism... Another logical answer would be that evil follows evil and, evil is almost always used to justify itself. It is up to you to believe or know which line you want to follow. One thing is certain, it is that the philosophy of Self Knowledge as taught by the Rosicrucian Order, AMORC; when uncorrupted by any religious belief , leaves no room for evil under any form of evidence or application. Furthermore, since those who seek self knowledge only accept what can be proven, encounter no proof to evil itself other than in the acts and the actions of humans, find nothing to substantiate even the existence of evil. It ensues that we must conclude that: "Evil only exists in the heart of humans". Please do not hesitate to follow with your personal impressions. And accept my best wishes for peace Profound ** Avec mes meilleurs voeux de Paix Profonde Sincerely/Sinc?ment, Rodolphe Schomberg

For whom ever loved the history of this Country, Rara was a reunion of the "big Head" around Leogane particularly. That was the best opportunity to go to see our out of Town brothers evoluted their way. We admired it and we participated with our heart into it. By their costumes, and their rituals they presented an atmosphre richer than our carnival; we had fun! That was a question that deserved an essay for at least 500 words to answer.Keep it up!

The rhythm of the vacine(bamboo)marinated with the tambou blended with the chants of the followers will definately make one dance. I was raised in Haiti with the fear that rara is associated with the devil. It was not until I attended college in the US,had a chance to study and understand Haitian's music.Although I love the rhythm of rara, through my research, I have learned and convinced that rara is associated with the devil. Before a rara steps out, it has to make some special ceremonies and prayers. No adults will allow their young kids to stay in a rara after dark. Not only rara is associated with the devil, some of the bands are also included.
