The Haitian recognition in the city of St. Augustine. It was officially approval to erect a life-size statue of the Haitian General Jorge (Georges) Biassou in the city of St. Augustine for being the highest ranking Spanish officer in St. Augustine during the 1700′s.
General Jorge (Georges) Biassou was one of the leaders in the Haitian revolution that eventually ended by creating the first Black independent nation in the new land. He arrived in St. Augustine in 1796 and became a decorated Spanish general.
The Haitian hero General Jorge (Georges) Biassou died in St. Augustine in 1801 and was berried at Tolomato Cemetery. The exact location of his grave has been lost.
