Paul Eugene Magloire

Paul Eugene Magloire was a general’s son born on July 19, 1907 in Haiti. He studied in Cap Haitian. He was a 6 feet tall, nicely built man, a womanizer who liked to dance and was a horse’s lover. He married Yolene Leconte on April 18, 1936 and had 5 children: Raymond, Elsie, Paula, Yola, and Myrtha.

In 1950, as a member of a junta, Paul Eugene Magloire announced his candidacy for president and became the 33rd President of Haiti with 99% of the votes. He ruled the country from 1950 to 1956.

During his reign, Haiti tourism was in progress. Schools, roads, public buildings, prisons were built. Major events occurred during Magloire presidency; building of “Peligre” which alimented electricity, 1st Archbishop in Haiti in 1953, Commemoration of 150th anniversary of the Independence in 1954, building of Hospital Albert Schweitzer in Deschapelles (Artibonite), visit of American President Richard Nixon in 1955.
In 1956, Paul E. Magloire’s popularity declined. He left Haiti to Jamaica then to USA where he resided for many years until the fall of the Duvalier’s regime. He went back to Haiti when Baby Doc lost power. He died blind in Petionville, Haiti on July 12, 2001.
