An idea that could be used by those interested in reaching the Haitian population in Haiti. UNICEF is using the Haitian Rara to convey prevention messages about cholera in Haiti. The International organization recently organized an event where close to three thousand people in Haiti were invited around the topic of Cholera in Haiti and how to reduce its spread into the population.
UNICEF concentrated the effort in the Central region of Artibonite where the Cholera epidemic was suspected to start in Haiti and most of the victime are coming from. Rara music groups were targeted to inform the community about the disease. UNICEF provided the Rara groups training on the prevention and treatment of Cholera. These prevention and treatment messages and slogans were expected to be included in the Rara songs with the objective to educate the population.
This UNICEF initiative was organized in partnership with several other organizations and government agencies. Some in that list includes: the Municipality of Les Cayes, Haitian Ministry of Health, International Medical Corps, and the National Confederation of Haitian Voodoo
