It was announced that an agreement between U.S., France and Haiti was signed where both U.S. and France to invest $25 Million to rebuild University Hospital of Haiti located in Port-au-Prince. This was announced by U.S. Secretary of State, Mrs. Hillary Clinton.
How likely this project is to create employment in Haiti?
Building anything in Haiti currently will create jobs. However, how many jobs will be created by rebuilding Haiti largest Health care facility, University Hospital of Haiti?.
With the actual needs of the Haitian population, this can only be a drop in the bucket. According to the CIA World Fact books, in 2003, 80 percent of the Haitian population lives below the poverty line, along side with countries such as Liberia, Gaza Strip, Zimbabwe and Chad. At the same time, the country was growing at a rate of three percent, with an inflation rate of over 8 percent. In real term, the country was loosing power and energy while running.
An Investment to rebuild University Hospital of Haiti should not be seen as a drop in the bucket in term of job creation. It should be seen instead as a light or a sign on where the international community needs to focus their attention if they really want to make a difference in Haiti.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in the United states, Health care is expected to be the fastest growing segments in the job market in the coming years. If it can be done in the U.S., why not in Haiti?. If we offer basic health care to the Haitian population, not only we will have a healthier population but also create a high number of good jobs for the population.
Do you think th government should create more health care jobs in Haiti?
Do you think that a healthier nation can improve our current economic situation?
