A study done by Boston Medical Center revealed that Haitian descent individuals are having a much harder time controlling their blood sugar than either African-American or White. People with diabetes are recommended by their doctors to maintain their A1C levels, below 7 percent to avoid further health complication such as heart disease, vision loss and other diabetes related illnesses.
According to the study, Haitians on average scored six percentage points lower than African-American and nine percentage points less than White.
Many Haitians living in the United States are affected by diabetes. We all know family members who have been fighting the disease for years.
Why is this so prevalent with Haitians?
Have we been doing something we are not supposed to do?
Should we change our diet, habits? I know many Haitians who said that they will not eat salad because only horses eat vegetable.
Should we exercise more?
According to Dr. Varsha Vimalananda who conducted the study, the followings are likely to be the possibilities:
1) Haitians tend to have a high carbohydrate content diet like rice,
2) Lack of communication between Haitian patents and their doctors
