It seems that the cholera outbreak is spreading in Haiti. Recent cases of cholera have been reported in La Gonave, The City of Archaie and Croix-des Bouquet.
Can the Cholera outbreak be contained in a country such as Haiti?
As of now the official count of people killed by the Cholera outbreak in Haiti has risen to 150. It is estimated that the actual number is much higher.
The hospitals in the area have reported that they would need additional help because people continue to die at their doorsteps before receiving care.
The World Health Organization said today that their biggest nightmare is for the outbreak to reach the tent cities scattered throughout the Capital of Haiti. Currently, over one million people are living in those tent following the earthquake.
It is estimated that a major outbreak of cholera in one of these tents could bring the death toll much higher. What can prevent it from spreading? The way we do business in Haiti does not help. Have you ever been to an outdoor market in Haiti? Usually masses of people on top of one another, selling their products. Most of these facilities are not equipped with either bathrooms or running water.
I do not know about you but this is a time for a miracle for my loved country. Just like other crisis in the past, it doesn't appear that we can come out of this cholera crisis by ourselves.
