The Haitian movie industry

I don't know if you would agree with me; however i think the Haitian movie industry has been in an explosive mode for the past ten years. New Haitian movies have been coming out at least every two to three Months. The list of Haitian movie makers are long and continues to grow every year.

It was not too long ago when it was hard for me to find a good movie produced by Haitians, addressing specific Haitian issues. I remember the time of French  and American movies while growing up in Haiti. The days of Karatee, Western, Spy movies. Although they were interesting, these films only educated young Haitians like me about foreign cultures. This is probably one of the reasons why since I was 10 years old, I wanted to come and live in New York City.

Now, most of the problems faced by the Haitian community in real life are being addressed on film. A movie is one of the few mechanisms available that allows you to capture one's attention for an extended period of time, anywhere from to to three hours. Haitian movies can be used to educate the population about many issues.

What are the factors responsible for the sudden popularity in Haitian movies?

One of the factors has to do with the production cost. Many Haitian movie producers can now afford to make a decent Haitian movie for as low as $15,000. Today, anyone can purchase a good digital video camera and record excellent pictures anywhere.

More Haitians are becoming interested in production or developing the Haitian film industry. Whether as film producer, actors, or just participating in making a profit in the industry by promoting or reselling the product.

Another aspect of the sudden popularity in Haitian movies is the demand for such a product. With so many Haitians living in different countries all over the world, a locally produced film helps them to connect back to their culture. Also since most of these movies are produced in the Creole language, that makes them even more attractive to the Haitians consumer

As it is in the case of the movie industry elsewhere, the Haitian film industry is not immune from piracy. This practice prevent the movie producers to make money to improve the quality of the product.

Whatever the problem is, it definitely needs to be resolved. The Haitian movie industry is very promising. The only way to continue with the success it already acquired, is to improve the quality of the product. More knowledge and professionalism will help the Haitian film industry to deliver a better product, and ultimately increase their share in the overall movie industry.
