Akra, Haitian dish made from black eyed pea fritters

Also known as Malanga acra,  Akra is a Haitian food preparation made simply by deep frying the root vegetable. The root portion of the Malanga acra is the fried in form of fritters and tastes delicious. This dish is extremely popular in Haiti. It is quite simple and can be easily prepared at home.

Ingredients required for making akra at home- Peeled and finely grated roots of the Malanga acra are mixed along with chopped garlic, parsley and a small amount is added to enhance the taste in it. Spices include habanero pepper. Black eyed peas are also added while preparing this popular Haitian recipe. Traditionally the fried fritters that are made by deeply frying the roots of Malanga acra are never served with any kind of sauce. Alternatively, the akra can also be served with a pickle made from vegetables such as carrots, onions that has been shredded and mixed with hot peppers. This pickle is known as pikliz and it serves as a replacement for the ketchup. This combination of the fried fritters of akra is popular these days and this tastes really delicious.
