There could not be development in Haiti without electricity. This is the foundation for any economic progress in Haiti.
Is everyone in agreement with me? You need electricity to run the machines that are going to create the manufacturing jobs. To have productive government employees that are going to give you the necessary services, they need electricity to run the computers, a well lighted and comfortable room to process the required information. For the entertainer who wants to provide some fun activities for the working person, they need electricity for a night performance.
In the area of security, lack of adequate electricity both at home and in the streets of Port-au-Prince and other cities has contributed to the high insecurity level we have been a custom to. The dark nights in the streets of Haiti have been giving way to Zinglendo, high jacking and assassinations. Most of the bandits tend to operate freely at night.
A study that was done in the year 2004 regarding electricity usage in Haiti showed how bad the problem of electric in Haiti really is. The average per capita consumption of electricity in Haiti in 2004 was 75 kWh, which represents the lowest in the region. Thousands of Haitian homes, businesses and emergency facilities have to rely entirely on small privately owned generators to meet their own electricity needs.
It is estimated that only 12.5 percent of the Haitian population is having regular access to electricity right now. Haiti needs about 200 MW of electricity by 2020. Where will we get this electricity to implement the new development plan for the country?
The Haitian Government and the international community need to look at several key energy supply sources to solve Haiti electricity problem. We need to repair our old Peligre hydroelectric Dam and assure that it can at least provide the same amount of electricity it provided in the past to the Haitian population. We also need to look at renewable energies such as wind, solar, and various form of energies that will decrease our dependence on foreign sources to solve our electricity problem.
Do you have a better solution to solve our electricity problem in Haiti?
