Michaelle Jean was appointed Governor General of Canada by Queen Elizabet II.
Born on September 6, 1957, Michaelle Jean was a Haitian refugee who came to live in Canada in 1968. She was born and raised in Port-au-Prince, but spent a good part of her youth in the city of Jacmel. When Jean and her family left Haiti in 1968, it was to escape the regime of Duvalier dictatorship.
Michaelle Jean received a Bachelor degree in art from the University of Montreal and a master degree in Comparative Literature. She speaks fluently French, English, Spanish, Italian and Haitian Creole
After graduated from university, Jean worked as a radio broadcaster for Radio Canada. She then worked with abused women and children
She was appointed into the position on the recommendation of Canada Prime Minister Paul Martin. As Canada's Governor General and head of state, Michaelle Jean focused her attention on the protection of the environment, shielding of culture against the threat of globalization and protecting young people. She also continued to fight for victims of domestic violence.
In early 2010, Michaelle Jean announced to the press that she would step out of her role as Governor General of Canada. At the time she left her position, Jean had an approval rating of over 60% among Canadians.
Just as Michaelle completed her term as Governor General of Canada, she was named UNESCO Speccial envoy to Haiti. She is expected to starte her new position on Monday November 8, 2010.
