More than nine months after the January earthquake, Haitians have a real opportunity to celebrate their dead. On All Saints Day and All Soul's Day this year, Christians attended churches services and visit cemeteries in memory of their loved ones who passed away as a result of the earthquake.
In the Haitian voodoo tradition, the first two days in November are dedicated to Gede. It is one of the most important Voodoo Holidays in Haiti. on November one and two, Voodoo practitioners go to the cemeteries to pray to the spirits, offering food, fresh flowers, coffee and peppered alcohol. some would light candles and dance all night after praying for the souls of their relatives.
In Haitian voodoo, Gede represents death and fertility. Those who are possessed with the Gede spirit tend to drink raw Haitian rum and dance the Haitian Banda rhythm. Others would honor "Baron Samedi" who is the Voodoo guardian of the cemetery.
We will never know the official number of people who died in the earthquake. No official registry of the deceased exists anywhere in Haiti. Some estimated the real number of victim for the earthquake to be between 200,000 and 300,000 people. Also as many buildings remained inaccessible for several months, many bodies were berried under these buildings. In the city of Leogane for instance, more than 90 percent of the houses were destroyed with many people inside of them.
Many people are still searching for their loved ones. No one has been able to tell them what happened to their family and friends. The practice is voodoo is the way that many Haitians try to deal with their loss.
This video represents a celebration in the Haitian voodoo tradition, Gede that takes place on all Saints Day and all Soul's Day. As you can see, one of the participants was possessed by Lwa Gede. In Haitian voodoo, Gede represents death and fertility
