A new archbishop was elected by Pope Benedict XVI to lead the Catholic community in Port-au-Prince. Archbishop Guire Poulard was elected exactly one year after the earthquake to fill the position left vacant by former Archbishop Joseph Serge Miot who died in the 2010 earthquake.

The Haitian government estimated that more than 300,000 people died in the earthquake and more than one million were left homeless.

Born on January 6, 1942, in the district of Leveque Canaria-Petit Goave, Bishop Guire Poulard received his primary education with the Primaries Brothers of Christian Instruction in Petit-Goave. He started his secondary education at Faustin Soulouque Natale, then moved to Notre Dame de Port de Paix, then, to Port-au-Prince  at the Minor Seminary College St. Martial.

The last three archbishops of Port-au-Prince before Guire Poulard include:

from July 3rd, 1955 to August 18, 1966, Archbishop Francois-Marie Joseph Poirier.

From August 20, 1966 to March1, 2008, Archbishop Francois Wolf Ligonde.

From March 1, 2008 to January 12, 2010, Archbishop Joseph Serge Miot who died in the 2010 earthquake.
