Pope Benedict XVI elects Archbishop Guire Poulard in Haiti

A new archbishop was elected by Pope Benedict XVI to lead the Catholic community in Port-au-Prince. Archbishop Guire Poulard was elected exactly one year after the earthquake to fill the position left vacant by former Archbishop Joseph Serge Miot who died in the 2010 earthquake.
The Haitian government estimated that more than 300,000 people died in the earthquake and more than one million were left homeless.
Born on January 6, 1942, in the district of Leveque Canaria-Petit Goave, Bishop Guire Poulard received his primary education with the Primaries Brothers of Christian Instruction in Petit-Goave. He started his secondary education at Faustin Soulouque Natale, then moved to Notre Dame de Port de Paix, then, to Port-au-Prince at the Minor Seminary College St. Martial.
