The Orchestra of the National Music Institute of Haiti (INAMUH).

President Martelly attended the Summit of Latin American States in Venezuela in December 2011, where he was invited to a concert given by several youth orchestras, which impressed him deeply. He decided Haiti needed a national youth orchestra and set about creating one, based on Venezuela’s El Sistema prototype. The program Martelly has created, System of Orchestras and Choirs Juvenile and Infantile of Haiti (SOCJIH), is part of the newly formed Orchestra of the National Music Institute of Haiti (INAMUH).

At Jacmel Wharf in early February, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between INAMUH and the Haitian government, to inaugurate SOCJIH. In attendance was Pedro Canino, Venezuelan Ambassador to Haiti, and Josette Darguste, Haiti’s Minster of Culture.

The SOCJIH is an ambitious program, comprised of four centers of music education and training. The head office is located in Hinche. It serves as the administrator of INAMUH and its three other centers: the Holy Trinity Philharmonic Orchestra in Port-au-Prince; the Haitian Relief Camp in Port-au-Prince; and the School of Music Dessaix Baptiste in Jacmel.

INAMUH gave a premiere performanance in Jacmel the day after the signing ceremony. Pre-school, elementary, and high-school students performed a musical piece after a brief three-week training period. Everyone agreed it was a lovely and well-executed performance.

Martelly says he intends to “. . . implement this project in each department of the country . . .” The program will integrate Haiti’s forgotten children into the social fabric of the island.
