April 20 is National Day of the Diaspora in Haiti

Finally a day dedicated to the Haitian Diaspora. It is a first in recognizing the help the Haitians living outside of the country bring to the economy of Haiti. The Ministry of Haitians Living Abroad announced on March 16, 2011 the proclamation of April 20 to be the "National Day of the Diaspora".

This special day comes to be by Presidential, signed by president Rene Preval.

This was done to promote the important relationship between Haiti and its diaspora

This new "National Day of the Diaspora" officially instituted, will be commemorated annually from now on with the virtue of expressing the gratitude for all their contributions.

The Day of the Diaspora this year was organized in collaboration with representatives of other ministries, including the Foreign Minister, Marie Michèle Rey, the Minister of Culture and Communication, Marie Laurence Jocelyn-Lassègue, executives from the Ministries of Interior and Territorial Communities and Tourism. As well as representatives of the diaspora communities of the United States, France and Cuba.
