In 1981 Marleine moved to the U.S. to join her family who had been in exile during the Duvalier reign.
Since arriving into the U.S., Marleine Bastien has been defending those who arrives on the shores of the country by boat.
She formed an organization called Fanm that gives a variety of services to mostly Haitian women. The services include preventing domestic violence and child abuse, issuing micro-loans for Haitian women to start small businesses, and teaching Haitians how to become American citizen.
Marleine Bastien is one of the original founders of Haitian-American Grassroots Coalition which is an organization that advocates the rights of Haitian refugees in the United States.
Marleine has been recognized by many organizations for is hard work in defending the Haitian refugees.
