With Earthquake and now Cholera where is the Haitian consciousness

According to a U.N. official, Mr. Imogen Wall, The latest count for the number of death caused by cholera in Haiti is 337, with 4,764, the number of confirmed cases. These numbers are based on Hospital record which means that these people came at a hospital of clinic where authorities are keeping records.

How many people in Haiti are dead as a result of the cholera infection or are currently carrying the virus? I don't think anyone knows. We also don't want to forget that we already berried more than 300,000 people following the January 12 earthquake.

According to a study done by World Health Organization, in any given population where there is an outbreak of cholera, around 75% of those infected do not show any sign of infection. Additionally, of those who are infected, in 80% of them the disease remains mild. It also reported that anyone carrying the cholera virus can continue to infect others anywhere from 1 to 15 days.

If that is the case, then the present situation in Haiti requires much more attention than what is being given so far. If, in dead, 75% of the people infected with cholera do not show any sign, then we are looking at 3 cases not reported for every one case reported, which will bring the estimated number of people infected to 19,056.

That was an estimation based on known cases. We also need to estimate the number of people in the general population who might be infected with the cholera virus mildly where these people will likely stay at home, not seeking medical care. You must know that our health system in Haiti is not adequate and many Haitians do look for alternative medicine for their health problems. The study estimates that about 80% of the cholera affected individuals will likely fall into this category. This will give you another 23,820 people. In brief, we can estimate that close to 42,876 people in Haiti can now be affected by the cholera outbreak one way or another.

Are we ready for 42,876 more people to die in Haiti this year?

The year 2010 seems to be the year that will determine our future as a nation.

Lots of time, we talk about the Haitian conscious. If it does not come out as a result of all we have been through in the year 2010, we can safely say that the Haitian population has no conscious.

I think the Cholera outbreak in Haiti will kill more people. I also think the actual number of people who are currently affected is more than what was reported. If we know the foreigners infected the people, they should pay the family of those who are dead. I think we should learn our lesson from all of what happened in Haiti in 2010.
