The Art of Haiti, how it gained its international reputation
The art of Haiti has been one of the most profitable industries in Haiti since 1940, the year when an American school teacher, Dewitt Peters arrived in Haiti and started to discover the beauty of Haitian art. He was moved by the artistic talents found among so many untrained and in many cases, uneducated Haitian artists.
The mystery in Haitian painting and what makes their art so unique are the incredible, vivid, raw colors found with their art. Dewitt Peters realized that with little support to these talented artists, they can continue to work on their creative spirit and provide a great exposure to the Haitian art. As a result, in 1940, Dewitts founded the Centre D'Art Haitian in Port-au-Prince.
