Daniel Fignole, One of the most influential leaders in the pre-Duvalier era Born in Pestel, Grand An

advertisement
A liberal labor organizer in Port-au-Prince, Daniel Fignole was a Haitian politician who became Haiti's provisional head of State for three weeks in 1957. A presidential candidate in 1957, Mr. Fignole ran against Dr. Francois Duvalier, a former intimate.

Gen. Antonio Kebreau ousted and exiled Daniel Fignole, ridding Dr. Duvalier of his most powerful competitor. Dr. Duvalier consequently came into power and persecuted thousands of the Fignole supporters.

In 1986, after the fall of Jean-Claude Duvalier, who succeeded his father, Fignole returned from a long exile to Port-au-Prince.
Daniel Fignole died in Canape Vert Hospital of prostate cancer at the age of 71.
