Cotes-des-Arcadins, ideal destination in Haiti for tourist

advertisement
Haiti is situated in the western region of the island of Hispaniola.  Its forms the heart of the famed Cotes-des-Arcadins which in English translates to the Arcadian Coasts. These are long stretches of white sandy beaches, some of the most beautiful in the world. They are usually the ideal destination in Haiti for tourists who love sailing and or fishing. Cotes-des-Arcadins combine three exotic beaches with the most pleasing tropical scenery and climate in the Caribbean region.

The Arcadian Coasts also boast an extensive beautiful coral reef system which has been an attraction to scuba divers from all over the world. Unfortunately it has almost died off due to over fishing.

The Cotes-des-Arcadins are opposite the mangrove islets in the Gulf of Gonave. They also have a rich historical heritage and when there, a tourist can visit the colonial museum Ogier-Fombrun Ogier. The museum is located in a historic sugar plantation. The architect, Gerard Fombrun who discovered the ruins, has collected interesting art and facts from the native Indian times to the period during colonization and reconstituted the museum. The museum also contains varied stories from the pre-Columbian era. The aqueduct that was used as a water conduit to the wheel that spun and crushed the sugarcane to extract the juice still exists in the plantation, even up to this date.

Montrouis is a coastal town in the Haitian department of Ouest. It’s located right in the middle of the Cotes-des-Arcadins. It lies within the coordinates 18°57'2? North and 72°42'16? West. It’s one of the most favorite tourist destinations in Haiti with many world renowned vacation hot spots. The beach boasts a slew of hotels and resorts which make this part of Haiti a vacation paradise. There are more than six world class hotels along its 15 kilometer beach line stretch which combined altogether, host thousands of tourists.

In January 2011 President Michel Martelly, during Haiti’s tourism week, held a meeting with stake holders in the tourism industry at Cotes des Arcadins. The meeting was geared towards fostering collaboration between the government and the hotel owners along the coast, to revive the tourism industry in Haiti which is a major sector in the economy of the country and a significant contributor to the nation’s economy.

The hotel owners decried the state of infrastructure in the region of Cotes-des-Arcadins. Bad state of roads leading to insurmountable traffic, illegal constructions, garbage and rubble dumping in the region were some of their grievances.

During the meeting the hotel operators and the government elected to prioritize the transport and communication infrastructure of the region. Rehabilitation of roads, protection of the regions biodiversity and implementation of a tourism scheme were some of the other priorities. They urged the government to hand out incentives to encourage growth in the Cotes-des-Arcadins.
