Art in Artibonite region, Haiti

advertisement
The skill and the technique of creating new visual representations is not a new thing in Artibonite and Haiti in general. The department has quite a number of renowned artists. Some of these illustrious artisans include Saincilus Ismaël, Délouis Jean-Louis, Alix Dorléus and Ernst Louizor. Their skills are not ubiquitous, and their paintings are unique and intricate. Common themes include human relations, day to day life activities, politics, fantasy and traditions. They use perfect blends of color to constructively pass a message.

Saincilus Ismaël is considered to be the father of art in Artibonite. The departed was the innovator of the techniques in the region after visiting the national museum in Port-au-Prince (Centre d’Art) in 1956. He was adept in painting and his work was strongly influenced by the Byzantine art he saw in books. His paintings are a masterpiece. Each of his painting, be it a house, or an environmental feature, was done in a complex patterns. He was not just a painter; he was also a teacher who willingly passed the skills on to others.

Délouis Jean-Louis worked for Saincilus Ismaël for 15 years, during which he learnt the basics. He was initially money driven, but with time he developed some profound love for art. It was then that he developed his beauteous paintings.

Alix Dorléus has a passion for the life in Artibonite Valley. It is no wonder that most of his paintings are based on this. He has a great passion that sees him paint all day on themes dictated by the spirit.

Ernst Louizor is an admirable impressionist who started his painting career at the tender age of 13 at the Centre d’Art in Haiti’s capital. He has been to many schools of fine arts and is a model to aspiring artists, including his wife, Gerda Louizor. He has displayed his art in the US and in Europe.

Other famed artists with their own defining styles include Carlo Jn.Baptiste Michel-Ange Altidort (who were both students of Saincilus Ismaël), Benson Myrthil,  Jn.Baptiste Edmonde, Jn.Baptiste Carlo, Kedson Estigene, Serge Francois and Joseph Francois.
