The musician Michel Martelly aka "Sweet Micky" became the 56th President of Haiti on May 14, 2011. The day of the inauguration was marked by pride, hope and some difficulties.
The day began at the national assembly with the opening of the extraordinary sessions of the Constitutional oath of President-elect Joseph Michel Martelly. The moment arrived when the President took off the presidential sash and put it on Martelly as they shook hands and embraced.
Solemn Mass was performed by Archbishop Louis Kébreau of Cap-Haitien. This was followed by a "Te Deum" on the lawn of the National Palace.
The new president then addressed the Nation on a short speech but very effective and straight to the point.
As the new Head of State, President Michel Martelly reviewed the Units of the National Police, accompanied by Haiti Police Chief Mario Andre Sol.
Foreign delegations were then invited to Lunch at the Karibe Hotel
Several dignitaries were present for the inauguration of Michel Martelly as the new president of Haiti. The "Haitian Joudalist took not of former U.S. President Bill Clinton, the U.N.'s special envoy to Haiti, and Edmond Mulet, head of the U.N. mission, and Desi Bouterse, the president of Suriname.
Many living former Haitian presidents were invited to attend the inauguration of Michel Martelly as the president of Haiti. The list of former Haitian presidents invited includes: Jean Claude Duvalier, Jean Bertrand Aristide, Boniface Alexandre, Henry Namphy, Leslie Manigat, Rene Preval, Prosper Avril, Herard Abraham, Ertha Pascal-Trouillot and Raoul Cedras. The only former president we noticed was Ertha Pascal-Trouillot
