Migration, Environment and Climate Change as Haiti subject to study

advertisement
The growing internal population of Haiti with accelerated rural exodus to the capital is a cause of concern. A reconstruction of the capital city is a definite institutional challenge. Recently ‘IOM’ or International Organization for Migration has launched a three year European Union funded project to provide necessary information on migration, environment and facilitate climate change policy making. Recently, a group of IOM research partners has met at the IOM Headquarters in Geneva to develop a common design model for research and methodology for six targeted beneficiary countries-- Haiti, Dominican Republic, Papua New Guinea Kenya, Mauritius, and Viet Nam.

The project named "Migration, Environment and Climate Change: Evidence for Policy" will contribute global knowledge base on the relationship between migration to changes in environment and climate and the formulation of necessary policies with special emphasis on migration as an accepted strategy. The issue of migration started soon after the U.S occupation in 1915. Under the Duvalier regime, it got intensified in various forms like permanent migration, educational migration, legal migration, exile and illegal migration, etc. There are numerous causes for migration other than economic, political and social reasons.

As per Frank Laczko, the Head of IOM Migration Research, the project has come at the right moment when such implementation strategy for migration was very much needed. The project will create local research capacity building workshops, pre-eminent training manual on migration with effect on climate and environment changes, global online information sharing platform and undertake national level country assessments, consultation and prepare a final comparative report.

The European Union will provide financial assistance up to €1.93 million of the €2.4 million project. The fund of the project will contribute every activity within the framework for maximizing the development of migration calls in every feasible way.
