Finally the numbers show that violence in Haiti is not so high after all. According to research conducted by two social scientists, "Haiti's capital has seen a significant drop in homicide rates in recent years despite public perception". For a long period, Haiti was considered to be a dangerous country. The rate of crime in Haiti was very high and security was deteriorated as a result of the rise of drug trafficking, kidnapping, murders, armed robberies and home break-ins. Holiday periods, especially Christmas and Carnival, often bring a significant increase in criminal activity in Haiti
The report indicated that Haiti has seen a sharp drop in homicide rates in recent years. Even more interesting, the report observes a sharp declines within just five years. For instance, homicide in 2004 in Haiti was averaging 19 per 100,000 people. In 2009, that number decreased to just three persons per 100,00, the report indicated.
If you want to compare this rate to rate to other countries in the area that are doing very well in tourism and other areas. The country of Jamaica is ranked number three in a list of the most violent country in the world. It has an average annual homicide rate of 60 per 100,000 from 2004 to 2009. Honduras had an average annual homicide rate of 50 per 100,000 from 2004 to 2009. In the meantime, Jamaica has been ranked as on of the top five destinations in the world for tourism.
