Disbanded Haiti military and their reinstating by Michel Martelly

advertisement
In 1995, the state of Haiti disbanded its military contingent. For decades, the military had interfered with governance, orchestrated coups and was accused of crimes against humanity. The Haiti army grew so powerful it became a tool of oppression and was consequently disbanded by President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. Since then Haiti has been relying on United Nations peacekeeping missions.

In November 2011 President Michel Martelly announced that he would be reinstating the army. He held meetings with diplomats from the Europe, Canada, United States and Latin America to look for funding. Although most of the states were adamant they wouldn’t fund the new military, the president has gone ahead and started the reinstating of the force under the command of a former general and has gone as far as to ask former soldiers to apply.

The force is meant to protect whatever is left of the country’s forests, help in natural disaster management and aid the police to curb drug trafficking. It is also meant to patrol Haiti’s borders, help in times of crisis or civil unrest while also creating jobs.
