1751 Port-au-Prince Earthquake

The 1751 Earthquake occurred on November 21 at approximately nine miles south-west of Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince, at 12:50. The earthquake was followed by a huge Tsunami sea wave. Reports indicated that Port-au-Prince, which was a city of the colonial Saint Domingue, was leveled by the quake. According to the French historian who spent long time researching on this particular earthquake: "Only one masonry building in Port-au-Prince did not collapse".

Haiti is located between two plates past one another and the fault is called Enriquillo Plantain Garden fault. It is estimated by scientists that the fault accumulates on average about 7mm a year. Haiti will always be in danger of major earthquake like the 1751 quake because the fault gradually accumulating stress until it's time to release it all at once in a earthquake.

The 1751 Port-au-Prince Earthquake was one of the many earthquakes that Haiti has to deal with. Every time these quakes hit, they usually leave massive destructions and losses in human lives.
