What a wonderful time Christmas season was in Haiti back then!
Christmas in Haiti was a wonderful season for the young, the old, the poor, rich, Christians and non Christians. All radio stations will be playing Christmas songs all day long.
When waking up on Christmas morning, you quickly flip your pillow looking for toys as it is Santa’s favorite place to hide them if you were good according to your parents. Children carry that innocent tale for as long as they can remember.
Warm wishes are presented. Hugs and kisses exchanged. Hung over teenagers will wake up dazed, with no remorse. Hot, spicy Haitian “pate”, patties are served with hot cocoa, delicious ak-100, or some leftover “bouillon” from Christmas Eve.
Visitors, family, friends come over on Christmas day. They share little Christmas gifts or simply chat a little bit and go about their business.
After breakfast, all seated around the Christmas tree will nervously play or reveal their secret brother/sister which is a game called “echange de cadeaux”.
Before the big day, all family members’ names are dropped in a basket or a box. The youngest in the family will shake the basket and each member will secretly pick a name and that person is named a secret brother/sister to whom a chosen gift is presented on Christmas Day.
Children happily unpack, unwrap their toys. They jump around, scream all their lungs. Go house to house to show their friends. It is complete joy.
