Jean-Claude Duvalier, arrested or taken for questioning, faces Haitian justice
Two days after the return of Baby Doc Jean-Claude Duvalier to Haiti, he faced his past and went head to head with Haitian justice. Some people called it arrest, yet others called it a conversation; however, on January 18, 2011, just two days after his arrival, Jean-Claude Duvalier was detained from room 303 of hotel Karibe in Port-au-Prince. He appeared calm and was not handcuffed.
Duvalier was taken before a judge in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, by State Prosecutor's Office and interrogated about theft and corruption. He was later released, however, the country's State Prosecutor's Office took away his passport and ordered him to remain in the country at the disposition of the Justice Department
Jean-Claude Duvalier returned to Haiti on January 16, 2011 after more than 25 years in exile in France. According to him: "I came to help my country".
The return of Jean-Claude Duvalier to Haiti has generated national as well as international attention and comments. On the one hand, supporters and Members of his regime were happy to see him; on the other hand, remembered the cruelty that took place during his administration and that of his father Francois Duvalier.
Foreign government reaction to the return of Jean-Claude was that of a surprise. The French government that was supposed to be aware of the return stated that they were unaware of the return until Jean-Claude landed in Haiti. They denied any allegation of complicity on their part.
At this point, no one knows how the situation will end.
