The Haitian Iron Market, Marche en Fer, is standing once again in the middle of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, more beautiful than ever, thanks to the Mr. Denis O'Brien, the CEO of Digicel. The Irish billionaire donated $12 million for the project of renovating the Iron Market or Marche en Fer.
With the re-opening of the Iron market, billionaire Denis O'Brien, will gave back the opportunity to thousands of merchants to sell their arts and other products and make a living to support their family. The renovated Iron Market: Marche en Fer" is in compliance with new building codes, resistant to both hurricane and earthquake.
The now Haitian Iron market "Marche en Fer" also known as Marche Hyppolite was built in the 19th century in France. The original plan was not to build a Marche. The French engineers made this structure to be used in Cairo, Egypt as a railway station. The deal felt apart and President Florvil Hyppolite purchased it to feet his overall plan at the time which was to modernize the Haitian capital. The Marche en Fer arrived in Haiti in 1891 and since, has been the center of commerce for Port-au-Prince.
The historic Marche en Fer had its share of difficulties recently. The iron market was decimated by a fire in 2008, and the 2010 earthquake gave it the final knock-out punch that actually brought the marche to its knee before the Digicel CEO said enough is enough this renovation work.
Not only Billionaire Denis O'Brien of Digicel agreed to restore the Marche, it was reported in Times Newspaper that he will also fund the maintenance of Marche Hyppolite until the year 2061.
