Will Jean-Claude Duvalier ever get the money from Swiss Banks?
In 1986, after the forced exile of Jean-Claude Duvalier to France, the Swiss government decided to put a hold on fund deposited by Jean-Claude Duvalier to their bank. The total amount is estimated to be $5.8 million. The fund was frozen because it is alleged that the money were not earned but stolen from the Haitian treasury.
Since the confiscation of the fund, the Duvalier family has been fighting both the Swiss and the Haitian government who has officially requested that the money be returned to the Haiti.
A new law passed in Switzerland, which will be effective on February, 1, 2011, will give the Swiss authority the right to return stolen money from the place where it was stolen from, unless there are adequate evidence that the fun was not stolen.
In order to have access to $5.8 million currently frozen in Swiss banks, Jean-Claude Duvalier is now required to show adequate evidence that he in fact earned the money.
