At the time, most of the economy of the region depended on Dauphin Plantation with sisal and Fiber Rope. I remember many people who told me how good things were during the time when Dauphin Plantation in Caracol was in full production. The company affected the entire North region of Haiti and beyond. Those who were not directly employed at the Dauphin Plantation were involved in their own businesses, serving the people working there.
The entire Dauphin Plantation in Caracol came to an end as demand for Fiber Rope and Sisal products started decreasing. The decline was caused mainly by new technology and a demand in the world marked for plastic and other products that have become much more superior than Sisal and Fiber. As demand for became less and less, The entire Dauphin Plantation had to close its door, leaving an entire region in chaos. Consequently, the entire region of Caracol collapsed.
If there is anything to lean from the experience with Dauphin Plantation in Caracol is that the region did not diversify and only relied on one product which were sisal and Fiber Rope. As we are building a new Caracol Industrial Park, we need to learn from the experiences gained from Dauphin Plantation to make it this time a lasting economic development of the region.
