Haiti is basically an agricultural society. It has been reported that two third of Haitians live of agriculture.
The small scale farming of farming that exists in Haiti, combined with other issues such as the phenomenon of deforestation affect the agricultural production. Also, Haiti is a mountainous country, which makes farming much more difficult.
Mountains cover much of the countryside and limit the land available for cultivation. The Haitian Government relies on international economic assistance for fiscal sustainability.
Despite all that, Haitian farmers are able to cultivate a variety of food products. Red, black, and other kinds of beans are very popular in Haiti. Banana and plantain are also very common. The Haitian Mango are consumed locally, a an increasingly large portion reserved for export. Other food products in Haiti include citrus fruit, avocados, pineapples, watermelons, almonds, coconut, okra, peanuts, tomatoes and breadfruit.
